Audi redraws its China business around two brands and two partners

A clearer split reduces internal overlap. Its success depends on SAIC building a viable electric business around the AUDI name.

Audi is assigning each Chinese partner a more coherent brand business. FAW Audi will operate the four-ring marque across combustion and electrified products. SAIC Audi will concentrate on the AUDI letter brand. Clearer responsibility should make product, engineering and distribution decisions easier to coordinate.

FAW gains greater certainty around its established franchise. SAIC receives a clearer growth mandate, but must build an electric business large enough to sustain its network as its four-ring sales transition ends in 2027.

What the agreement changes

The arrangement was announced on 26 October. SAIC Audi may continue selling four-ring vehicles until the end of 2027, while the relevant aftersales operations continue. Reuters, 26 October

Product and transition details are covered in The Paper's account of the joint statement. Both partners retain exposure to electrification; the allocation follows brands and operating responsibilities.

Previously, two partners selling the four-ring marque could overlap in product positioning, marketing and network investment. The new allocation provides a clearer basis for deciding which business should receive a product or investment. Consumers will still compare similarly priced Audis, but internal competition for the same mandate can be reduced.

SAIC now has a development organisation behind its brand

In April, Audi and SAIC announced an Audi-led innovation and technology centre and plans for four new models on the next-generation Advanced Digitized Platform. The Shanghai centre was formally established in September with end-to-end vehicle development capabilities dedicated to the letter brand. April agreement; September establishment

These steps explain the October allocation. The brand needs its own product definition, development cadence and engineering accountability to meet Chinese expectations for cabin software, driver assistance, packaging and price.

The commercial advantage of local development lies in earlier trade-offs. Teams can decide how to divide a fixed budget between space, electronics and chassis performance while suppliers are still able to influence the design. This reduces expensive changes after specifications have been frozen.

Headquarters should retain explicit standards for safety, driving quality, materials and manufacturing, while delegating product-mix and software-timing decisions. Requiring duplicate approval of every local choice would add overhead to the new centre.

The letter brand needs a broader sales base

The Paper, citing CPCA data, reported January–September sales of 4,558 E5 Sportbacks and 11,385 E7Xs. The SUV is making a larger contribution. The Paper, 26 October

That difference matters for dealers. A successful SUV can generate traffic, but the network also needs successive products, test-drive conversion and returning service customers. Rent, staffing and working capital continue between launches.

SAIC should therefore deepen performance in its existing priority cities before expanding the network aggressively. Store-level reviews should track qualified leads, test drives, retail conversion, inventory and contribution. Where continuing subsidies are needed to sustain sales, product positioning, pricing or store costs require attention.

AUDI also needs a concise purchasing proposition. Customers need to understand who develops the cars, which services Audi supports and what the intelligent features improve in daily use. Time spent explaining the relationship between two badges takes time away from understanding a customer's needs.

A well-designed test drive can make the proposition clearer: demonstrate ride quality, assistance and cabin functions on a consistent route, then relate those benefits to the actual purchase price.

FAW should use greater stability to accelerate renewal

FAW retains established brand recognition and customer relationships, but still needs to win new electric-car customers. Combustion and electric products require different selling skills. Electric prospects ask about charging, updates and assistance as well as size and trim.

Retailers should adapt routes, demonstrators and training. Existing owners should receive replacement offers based on their actual driving requirements, with appropriate electric and combustion choices. Excessive discounting across the range would damage both launch pricing and used-car values.

Internal objectives should also differ. Combustion operations require inventory, price and contribution discipline. Electric operations need new-customer acquisition, feedback on software use and effective retail execution. A single volume target encourages stores to sell whichever vehicle is easiest to transact today.

The transition requires specific dealer and customer commitments

The end-2027 deadline raises practical questions about showrooms, remaining inventory, workshop equipment and investment in the new brand. These belong in executable dealer agreements, with clear supply schedules, warranty and parts responsibilities, and training costs.

Regional teams should prepare individual store transitions covering people, demonstrators and customer communication. Owners need stable answers about repairs, warranty and appointment records. Service continuity will influence whether they recommend the brand during the change.

The allocation improves Audi's organisational clarity in China. FAW will carry more responsibility for stabilising the existing business; SAIC will carry a more concentrated mandate to acquire new customers. The useful measures at the end of the transition are four-ring pricing discipline, successive successful AUDI products and healthy economics in both dealer networks.
