Faster vehicle development: CAD, CAE and where to locate engineering centres
What design, modelling, computation and validation take—and how global CAE centres, including Indian operations, can shorten development cycles.
Contents
A change to a front bumper can affect aerodynamics, cooling, pedestrian protection and manufacturing. Designers update geometry; simulation engineers prepare models, calculate and interpret results; project leaders decide what to change. Repeated loops like this consume substantial development time.
Moving design and simulation work to India is an established practice. Mercedes-Benz’s Indian centre undertakes CAD, CAE and method development. Renault’s Chennai CAE roles include vehicle-programme and methodology responsibilities. Volvo Group has added vehicle, test-bench and materials capabilities in India. Overseas engineering responsibilities can develop from task execution into deciding how to analyse and validate products.
The priority for shorter development cycles is faster coordination between design changes, engineering analysis and decisions. Location should serve that purpose. Mature, reusable simulation work lends itself to concentration. Novel structures, materials and frequent testing require closer connections with designers and test teams.
Key conclusions
The greatest time benefit from CAD and CAE is finding problems earlier and reducing physical rework. Faster model preparation and calculations allow more alternatives before design freeze. Avoiding a prototype revision and retest can have a larger programme impact. Overall timing depends on delays and rework removed from the critical path.
India deserves a place on the priority shortlist for global CAE capability centres. Manufacturers and suppliers already have mechanical-design, simulation, software and testing operations there. It is a strong candidate for substantial, mature workloads serving European programmes. Selection should compare total cost and turnaround for accepted engineering work.
Centralise methods and reusable capabilities while retaining decision-capable engineers near vehicle programmes. Programme engineers own performance targets, trade-offs and test interfaces; the capability centre owns methods, automation and analysis delivery. Both need the same controlled data versions.
Recruit first for physical modelling, test correlation and automation. Automation is reducing repetitive geometry cleanup, meshing and reporting. A staffing plan built mainly around manual repetition may need restructuring before it pays back.
What “drawing” and CAE actually involve
Automotive drawing covers several activities. Styling determines appearance and perception. Engineering CAD defines components and assemblies that can be manufactured and assembled. Drawings or three-dimensional product manufacturing information specify dimensions, tolerances, materials and inspection requirements. This article focuses on engineering definition and its connection to CAE.
CAD means computer-aided design; CAE means computer-aided engineering. For a battery tray, CAD defines shape, thickness, reinforcement, joints and packaging. CAE assesses behaviour under impact, vibration, loads or thermal conditions. Designers revise weak points and reconsider weight, cost, space and manufacturability.
| Work | Engineering activities | Deliverable | Schedule contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering CAD | Components, assemblies, packaging, joints and production constraints | Geometry, assembly relationships, bills of materials and versions | Clear inputs and fewer clashes |
| Drawings/product definition | Dimensions, tolerances, materials, surfaces and inspection | An approvable, manufacturable definition | Less supplier clarification and production rework |
| CAE preprocessing | Geometry simplification, mesh, materials, connections, loads and boundary conditions | A checked analysis model | Timely, trustworthy analysis |
| Solving and interpretation | Computation, numerical checks and interpretation | Performance assessment and proposed changes | Screen alternatives before building parts |
| Test correlation/method maintenance | Compare with measurements and investigate assumptions | Validated methods, scope and error records | Greater confidence in future decisions |
CAE includes crash, durability, noise and vibration, aerodynamics, thermal management and forming. These disciplines require different methods and evidence: fluid domains for airflow, deformation and contact for crashes, and suitable load histories and material data for fatigue. Preprocessing is easily underestimated. Geometry that looks complete may still require gap treatment, connections, materials and meshing. Engineers must decide which details to retain or simplify. Incorrect assumptions can send design changes in the wrong direction regardless of calculation speed.
How long it takes: labour, computing and waiting
Measure engineering effort, machine runtime and elapsed time from request to actionable conclusion separately. A one-day calculation may follow several days waiting for input, then wait again for a design review.
| Published example | Reported time | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Ansys automotive crash article, 2024 | Around 25–30 hours for a 40–50 million-element full-vehicle model on the described 700–1,000 CPU configuration | Solver time under specified complexity and computing conditions |
| Cadence automotive CFD case | One unnamed manufacturer’s raw-CAD-to-volume-mesh workflow fell from 15 days to 4.25 hours | Supplier-reported preprocessing and automation |
| Dassault Systèmes body-engineering article, 2021 | Described several weeks to build detailed simulation models after a design milestone, followed by several more weeks to generate and assimilate results | An observation of traditional batch-based workflows |

Two priorities follow: update analysis models efficiently as designs change, and get findings into decisions promptly. More computing addresses solving. Manual rebuilding, missing material data and approval queues need separate process changes.
Drawing schedules should distinguish parameter changes to an established part, detailed design of a new structure, cross-system packaging and complete production release. Mature derivatives reuse information; new structures require manufacturing, purchasing, suppliers and other engineering teams to coordinate.
Build estimates from actual labour, waiting and rework by task class in previous programmes, rather than assigning a single turnaround standard to all CAD or CAE work.
Turning faster analysis into a shorter programme
Consider an illustrative ten-working-day iteration: three days waiting for and clarifying inputs, three preparing the model, one queuing and calculating, and three interpreting and deciding. Halving the calculation day produces a 9.5-day loop. Reducing the four stages to one, one, one and two days produces a five-day loop.
Organise improvement around the complete design iteration. Separate departmental speed targets can overlook handovers.
Programme benefits arise in different ways. If analysis is holding up design freeze, a trustworthy result releases tooling, prototype and procurement work. If it exposes a structural problem early, changes can avoid later tooling modifications and retesting. If another activity remains critical, faster analysis creates room for more alternatives while launch timing awaits improvement elsewhere.
Ask the centre to report analysis turnaround and the decisions advanced or rework avoided. Confirm schedule benefits through programme critical-path reviews.
Volkswagen offers a broader organisational reference. Its 2025 annual report states that development speed in China increased by up to 30%. Its explanation of the Hefei model also emphasises local decisions, development–purchasing coordination and early supplier involvement. What India already does
A centre of excellence can execute analysis and own methods, quality standards and training. Public names differ; actual responsibilities matter.
| Organisation/location | Officially described activities | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz, Bengaluru/Pune | CAD, CAE and IT origins; responsibility for new design/CAE methods; Pune interior-component design | Capability can progress into method development |
| Renault, Chennai | Official CAE project-leader role covers programme coordination, performance assessment and simulation methods | Responsibilities include project and technical leadership |
| Volvo Group, Bengaluru | Vehicle TechLab announced in 2022 with vehicle/component facilities, simulators, benches and scanning; flexible-material testing/simulation collaboration added in 2024 | Digital responsibility grows alongside physical validation |
| Valeo, Chennai | Mechanical design, simulation, software/hardware work and local test capabilities | An established supplier-engineering ecosystem |

Mercedes-Benz illustrates accumulated method capability. Volvo Group illustrates the importance of access to parts, materials and tests as responsibility expands.
For simulation automation and software/data collaboration, Bengaluru is a sensible first candidate. For mechanical design, component engineering and test interfaces, compare Pune and Chennai. These are proposed shortlist directions based on confirmed operations; validate them through specialist recruitment and trial work.

Allocate work before selecting a location
Concentrate work with stable methods, definable inputs and inspectable outputs: derivative load cases, standardised meshing, automation and data management. Shared tools, experts and compute capacity can balance programme demand.
Keep target-setting, cross-system trade-offs, unusual failure investigation and key test correlation closely connected to programmes. These depend on design context and physical evidence.
For battery-tray side impact, a global centre can maintain models and compare reinforcement or joint alternatives. Programme engineers decide with body, battery, manufacturing and test specialists which structure to adopt. If a new joint disagrees with testing, model experts should participate in diagnosis before updating the common method.
A three-part responsibility structure is useful:
- Vehicle programme: targets, boundaries, design approval, testing and programme outcomes.
- Global CAE centre: methods, model libraries, automation, computation and analysis quality.
- Local CAE interface team: daily design discussions, input checks, cross-discipline issues and connections to tests and global experts.
Give the centre responsibility for a complete analysis, from input checks to actionable recommendations. Splitting cleanup, meshing, solving and reporting among disconnected teams adds handovers and loses context.
Locations suited to different needs
For European-led programmes requiring scale, compare India with existing European engineering bases. India offers an established basis for expandable analysis and automation. European bases offer proximity to programme owners, tests and suppliers. Benchmark them using the same work packages.
Romania provides an example of integrated engineering and physical facilities near European programmes. Renault’s official description covers design in Bucharest, testing in Titu, tooling in Pitești and plant support in Mioveni. Titu has tracks, benches and materials facilities. Dacia/Renault Romania
For Chinese-led vehicles with frequent local-supplier interaction, prioritise a CAE collaboration team near the Chinese design and validation base. Mature tasks can be shared globally; changing structures, supplier data and test findings need prompt local resolution. Volkswagen’s Hefei model illustrates the value of local authority and supplier coordination.
For new materials, structures or difficult performance development, start where the relevant experts and tests already exist. Early judgement and validation matter more than headcount. Expand repeatable analysis after methods mature.
For North American-led programmes requiring rapid daily responses, retain a North American project interface and evaluate offshore execution separately. Time-zone handovers suit clearly defined work. Frequent joint decisions need reliable overlapping hours.
Engineers and computing infrastructure need not share a location. Place compute according to security, licences, connectivity and cost; place people according to engineering collaboration. Test the whole route from model access through solving to results.
How to make the decision
Apply entry requirements before comparing price and speed: credible discipline leaders, required model and test access, software and computing availability, and workable programme collaboration.
| Criterion | Evidence required | Decision relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Talent | Actual specialist candidates, hiring lead times, mentoring and retention plans | Ability to build capability on schedule |
| Methods/testing | Completed work, test correlation and failure-diagnosis examples | Reliability for design decisions |
| Interfaces | Overlapping hours, version control, escalation and approval timing | Cross-border waiting |
| Automation | Demonstration of updates, modelling, solving and reporting on real models | Scalable productivity |
| Full cost | People, licences, compute, training, travel, review, migration and rework | Actual economics |
| Data/continuity | Permissions, logs, backups, licence scope and recovery exercises | Reliability on critical programmes |
Give candidate teams the same authorised work packages: a mature task, a design change and an anomaly requiring explanation. Define inputs, acceptance criteria and deadlines in advance. Measure first-pass acceptance, elapsed time, review effort and problem-solving quality.
Calculate total cost per accepted work package. Include headquarters’ correction effort. Where work is critical, assess its schedule consequences too.
For stable, long-term work carrying core methods, retain internal ownership of discipline leadership, methods and quality. Engineering-service providers can supplement peaks and clearly defined standard tasks.
AI changes the hiring priorities
In July 2026, BMW reported thousands of virtual crash simulations weekly and more than one petabyte of historical data. Its Mistral AI collaboration explores faster analysis of those results. Efficiency investment is extending into interpretation and engineering knowledge. BMW, 7 July 2026
Recruit people who build reliable physical models, correlate them with tests and automate repeatable processes. Together, these capabilities determine how quickly analysis can support design.
Use AI prediction and automation initially within validated methods and defined design ranges for screening. Selected designs then follow the programme’s required high-fidelity analysis and validation. Preserve data provenance, model versions, applicability and error records.
For many European manufacturers, the configuration worth testing first combines scalable simulation and automation in India with project engineering and test-correlation teams at major vehicle bases. Chinese-led programmes need sufficient local authority. Real work packages should determine which team produces an acceptable conclusion sooner and reduces the next round of revision.
