How Chinese EV makers turn social-media conversations into showroom visits
How Douyin, Xiaohongshu and WeChat connect to stores, with documented cases and practical responsibilities, incentives and investment decisions.
Contents
A customer watches a cabin demonstration on Xiaohongshu, asks about prices on Douyin and books a weekend test drive through WeChat. For the customer, this is one continuous purchase journey. Inside a car company, it can become three accounts, two stores and several salespeople competing for the same lead.
Some of the more useful practices among Chinese EV manufacturers address precisely this problem: product specialists create content, online conversations continue without restarting, and national campaigns connect to local test drives and orders. NIO’s sales-adviser accounts, XPeng’s WeChat booking process and Leapmotor’s livestream purchase vouchers offer different examples.
Manufacturers should manage social media as part of regional retail operations. Regional sales leaders should own the journey from acquisition to delivery, while headquarters maintains common product information, brand standards and systems. Separate budgets and scorecards at every level encourage duplicated effort and disputes over customers.
Four operating principles
Design content around a buying decision. A video should resolve a specific question: who can sit beside an installed child seat, how charging works without a home charger, or whether an upgrade justifies its price. The next action should match the question: compare specifications, speak to an adviser or book the relevant vehicle.
Preserve the relationship the customer has chosen. Someone who messages a particular adviser has already shown a willingness to engage with that person. Let the adviser continue. When another store is more convenient, transfer the service resources and agree how both parties are credited.
Centralise reusable capabilities and delegate local decisions. Product facts, finance calculators, customer systems and training benefit from common investment. Local production, advertising, test-drive scheduling and coordination between stores require regional authority. Stores provide real people, vehicles and judgement.
Scale spending according to the economics of completed sales. Reporting should connect the source account to cancellations, net deliveries and expenditure. Reach helps evaluate communication; bookings and test drives show sales progress; deliveries and contribution inform investment decisions.
What manufacturers have implemented
| Company and case | Actions | Publicly reported outcome or progress | Operational lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIO, Xiaohongshu, 2024 case | Tested accounts, content and acquisition routes; developed sales-adviser accounts, known as KOS, receiving direct messages | A platform commercial case reported more than 1,000 cars sold through over 160 KOS participants; no common reporting period was stated | Connect content creation with professional customer conversations |
| XPeng, WeChat, 2022 case | Linked Channels, mini-program test-drive offers, WeCom and CRM assignment | Supplier Youzan reported 30% lower acquisition cost and 50% higher conversion efficiency; comparison bases and sample sizes were not provided | Connect campaign bookings to existing customer relationships |
| Leapmotor, Douyin and Dongchedi, 2025 campaign | Combined large broadcasts, dedicated sessions and creator streams with purchase vouchers | Judongche reported 1,223 voucher purchases and 563 order conversions from 18 June to 19 July; smaller sessions generated 65% of voucher orders | Maintain ongoing activity and connect online offers to in-store redemption |
| Li Auto, livestream governance, 2025 | Introduced livestream operating rules and short-video procedures | Implementation disclosed in its official ESG report | Scale requires consistent product information and routine oversight |

These practices make the next step easier after someone watches content: finding a person, booking a car and continuing a useful discussion.
Give each platform a clear task
Douyin: demonstrate the product and secure a specific appointment
Use live demonstrations to address recurring purchase objections. Regional teams can select topics from stores’ recent sales and lost-customer records.
For a six-seat vehicle, a session could demonstrate child-seat installation, adult access to the third row and stroller storage with all seats occupied. Identify the vehicle specification and seating configuration, answer questions, then invite local viewers to bring their own child seat to a test drive.
The resulting appointment has a clear purpose. The adviser knows why the customer is coming and what to prepare.
Before broadcasting, confirm available vehicles, time slots and offer conditions. During the session, allocate separate attention to presentation and booking enquiries. Afterwards, scheduled advisers continue the conversations. Broadcast hours must overlap with customer-service coverage. An evening enquiry left until the following afternoon loses the opportunity to agree an appointment immediately.
National events suit launches and common offers. Local sessions can cover available vehicles, test routes and specific buying questions. Keep resources available after the national event ends.
Xiaohongshu: answer searchable questions and make advisers discoverable
Organise content around the questions customers ask before choosing a car: narrow parking spaces, child seats, long journeys, paint maintenance and monthly payments. Each post should address one problem with practical images and relevant conditions.
An adviser’s account lets readers assess expertise and familiarity with their needs. It should identify the brand, city and store. Personal expression is valuable; prices, specifications and offers must use current approved information.
Headquarters supplies reference material, regional teams identify local questions, and advisers contribute experience from demonstrations and customer meetings. This reduces production effort without filling every account with identical posts.
Answer direct messages before asking for contact details. A space question deserves measurements or a demonstration; a payment question needs the version, down payment and term. Once the customer has a useful answer, discuss the appointment.
WeChat Channels: continue the conversation through test drives and follow-up
Channels can show products, factories, ownership guidance and local events. Mini-programs provide booking, while WeCom supports follow-up.
A store could publish a preview of its weekend test route: where to assess ride comfort, practise parking and accommodate children. Advisers share it with customers discussing those subjects and offer available slots.
After a test drive, follow up on the unresolved issue. Charging concerns call for relevant routes and charging options. A version choice calls for a consistent feature-and-cost comparison. Regional content teams should produce material advisers repeatedly need.
Channels can also attract new customers. For existing contacts, the priority is continuity rather than making every campaign restart registration and introductions.
Responsibilities across headquarters, regions and stores
The following is an operating proposal based on the cases. Pilot it in selected cities before expansion.
Appoint one business owner for social-media retail performance, led by sales with brand, digital and finance participation. Brand manages communication quality, sales owns follow-through and orders, and finance defines costs and outcomes.
Regional shared teams should provide production and operations. Smaller stores need not each hire a photographer, editor and media buyer. A shared team can serve one city or neighbouring cities, while stores supply advisers, vehicles and customer-service capacity. Expand staffing according to actual workload.
| Task | Headquarters | Region | Store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | Product facts, national campaigns, shared assets | Local questions, production, review | Customer questions and real demonstrations |
| Accounts | Corporate identity, permissions, employee handover | Certification support, training, schedules | Named service and daily replies |
| Spending | Total budget, platform procurement, brand investment | Retail allocation by demand and capacity | Available appointment capacity and progress |
| Offers | National pricing and offer definitions | Local applicability | Vehicle-specific conditions, fees and expiry |
| Customer assignment | Identity and collaboration rules | Cross-store transfers and congestion | A designated adviser and next action |
| Test drives and sales | Systems and settlement rules | Vehicle and staff coordination | Demonstration, quotation, order and delivery |
| Review | Investment returns and scaling | Diagnose losses and act | Customer feedback and reasons for rejection |
Regional reviews should identify which content produces visits, which stores lose appointments and where test drives fail to become orders. Regional leaders need authority to change spending, staffing and vehicle allocation.
Headquarters should version and date offer materials. When finance terms change, update presenter guidance, video descriptions and adviser references, and stop advertising expired offers.
Make customer handovers explicit
Maintain a continuing service record. Initially collect only what is needed: source account, model, city, questions already answered and the customer’s chosen contact method. Add store, adviser, time and requirements when booking. Collection and transfers should follow customer authorisation and permitted platform methods.
Douyin’s official lead-management documentation includes source, associated video or broadcast, and follow-up store fields. Implementation depends on the product enabled, permissions and CRM configuration. Douyin developer documentation, accessed 25 October 2026
- Record the enquiry source and answer the question.
- Identify an existing adviser relationship. Preserve it when service is working; honour requests to change adviser or store.
- Confirm vehicle, time, location, adviser and special requirements before confirming the appointment.
- Let the receiving adviser see the previous discussion and prioritise those concerns in the demonstration.
- Record the next decision after the drive: another family visit, a trade-in quote or further comparison, with an owner.
- Return order and delivery status to the record. Track acquisition, assisting content and service location separately; deduplicate customers and orders in totals.
A pilot could target a human first response within five minutes during staffed hours, tracking both median waiting time and the slowest tenth of enquiries. Outside staffed hours, show the service schedule and let customers choose a callback time. This is a proposed operating target, not an industry benchmark.
Agree cross-store incentives before campaigns begin. If Store A creates the relationship and Store B provides the drive, credit A’s acquisition and B’s service. If B closes the sale, use a pre-agreed allocation. Dealer and agency networks also need agreements on costs, authorisation, redemption and settlement.
Change incentives to improve execution
In September 2026, Dianchang reported that Judongche tightened lead submission, including restrictions on manual WeChat entry and SMS verification for relevant lead cards. Its reporting also described repeated leads and incentives tied to quantity. Dianchang/36Kr, 16 September 2026
Evaluate work people can control and link part of the reward to later outcomes.
| Role | Main measures | Failure to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Presenter/content producer | Relevant local enquiries, accuracy, contribution to visits | Attracting gift seekers purely to meet volume targets |
| Customer-service staff | Responses, resolved questions, appointments kept, complaints | Replacing useful answers with repeated calls |
| Store sales | Completed drives, net orders and deliveries, feedback | Re-labelling existing orders as new social-media business |
| Regional operations | Deduplicated new customers, acquisition and sales costs, city-wide contribution | Attractive store figures hiding duplicate city-wide expenditure |
Follow enquiry cohorts over 30, 60 and 90 days, with longer-cycle prospects tracked separately. Include advertising, production, staffing, systems and additional incentives in cost. Keep brand-communication budgets distinct from retail projects.
Consider an illustrative campaign costing RMB60,000 and producing 30 net deliveries within 90 days: RMB2,000 per delivery. A subsequent cohort costing RMB100,000 and producing 35 deliveries averages roughly RMB2,857, but the extra five deliveries require RMB8,000 each in additional spending. Examine that marginal return before expanding further.
Also check the share of existing customers. Staggered pilots in comparable stores can test changes in total new customers, deliveries and expenditure. Attribution assigns contributions; incrementality testing informs investment.
Four practical lessons from documented cases
NIO: organise adviser accounts through regional support
Daofa’s 2024 reporting described regional RMC teams handling account certification, training and assets. Headquarters coordinated topics and policies; advisers created content. It also described advisers using another store’s test-drive resources when convenient for customers. Daofa/Jiemian, September 2024
Shared production support lets advisers spend more time on product explanations and relationships. Invest first in regional production and cross-store service rules, support a capable initial group, and turn successful practices into training before expanding participation.
XPeng: a renewed booking returns to the existing adviser
Youzan’s 2022 case described new enquiries being matched to store salespeople, while renewed bookings by dormant contacts were sent to their existing adviser. Youzan, 7 April 2022
A fresh appointment signals changed purchase intent. An adviser who knows the earlier obstacle can arrange a more relevant experience. Systems should turn renewed interaction into an assigned task showing the customer’s latest interest, and regions should check completion.
Leapmotor: sustain smaller sessions after the major event
Leapmotor combined purchase vouchers with large events, dedicated sessions and creator streams. The reported 65% smaller-session share included dedicated and creator broadcasts. Judongche, 25 August 2025
Headquarters can design the offer and platform partnership. Regions must confirm participating stores, vehicles, capacity, refunds and offer handling. Stores complete the experience and transaction. Put these activities in one schedule rather than giving departments disconnected reach, lead and sales targets.
Li Auto: manage accuracy as operations scale
Li Auto disclosed livestream and short-video procedures in its 2025 ESG report. Official report, page 28
For implementation, maintain a versioned answer library covering specifications, functional conditions and offer periods. Product-support specialists resolve questions outside the library, then add verified answers for all stores. Customer questions become a practical content backlog.
Prioritise regional operating capability
Start with an eight-week city pilot. In weeks one and two, define customer ownership, offers, accounts and coverage. In weeks three to six, run one broadcast theme and a focused set of searchable content. In weeks seven and eight, review visits, drives, orders and costs, continuing delivery tracking afterwards. Choose the platform best suited to local customers and team capability.
Prioritise customer coverage, shared production and operations, then advertising behind effective content. If stores are overloaded, add appointments and advisers first. If enquiries do not produce visits, improve answers and invitations. If customers reject the product or price after driving, involve product and sales management.
The capability worth building is a repeatable way to turn specific buying questions into local service and orders. Headquarters supplies reliable information and systems, regions organise resources, and stores continue the customer relationship.
